SAFETY

The Civilian Marksmanship Program is dedicated to the respect for and safe handling of firearms, instilling patriotism and discipline in our youth participants.  The CMP provides its constituents with the highest level of instruction in the proper control of firearms by highly-skilled coaches and veteran range safety officers in the classroom, at our ranges and wherever the CMP banner is displayed.

The Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) invites you and your club rifle team to participate in the CMP’s Monthly Matches. The matches will take place on 20 April at both CMP Marksmanship Centers & 18 May at the CMP’s Marksmanship Center South. The competitions will feature a Junior Air Rifle 3x20, 60 Shots Air Rifle Standing, 60 Shots Air Pistol, a 20 shot Novice Prone stage a National Match Air Rifle 20 Shot Standing, Garand Course and 3x20 events. National Match Air Rifle is a new shooting discipline with something to offer all rifle shooters—NMAR offers three competition classes with real challenges for shooters of all ages and competitive interests. Dan Arnold Wins Oklahoma Games Service Rifle Match as Four Others Pick Up EIC Leg Points

ARCADIA, Oklahoma – Distinguished rifle shooter, Dan Arnold, 47, of Norman, OK, was the overall winner of the CMP Games-Oklahoma Service Rifle EIC Match on Thursday, 4 April, with an aggregate score of 480-9X.

Awards were presented by CMP Board Chairman Judy Legerski and Vice Chairman Cris Stone.

Arnold persevered in the 500-point match, despite battling through flu-like symptoms throughout the event. Fellow Oklahoman, Kent Shomber, 53, of Edmond, finished second overall with a total score of 476-6X. Shomber is also a Distinguished rifle badge holder. Arnold strung together standing, sitting, prone rapid and prone slow stages of 97, 96, 99 and 188, respectively, in the National Match Course fired at 200, 300 and 600 yards.
Staying warm during the Service Rifle EIC Match was a challenge, as temperatures hovered in the mid-30’s with intermittent rain.

Harold Pate, 51, of Fort Worth, TX, took home 10 leg points as the high non-Distinguished shooter and finished third overall with an aggregate score of 460-7X. Steven Neilson, 54, of Nash, OK, placed fourth (460-6X) and picked up eight EIC points. David Tehan, 54, of Cohasset, CA, placed fifth and John Heger, 55, of Maize, KS, placed sixth and each earned six leg points. Neilson and Heger moved to within four points of “going Distinguished” during the match, fired by 39 competitors at the Oklahoma City Gun Club’s Jim Hill Rifle Range.

The match began in a spitting rain with the thermometer hovering around the 35-degree mark. The sun made a brief appearance when shooters moved back to 300 yards under variable winds.

Heavy rain washed out the M16 Small Arms Firing School (SAFS) Match scheduled for Wednesday, 3 April and the match was moved to Friday afternoon, 5 April for all participants who were staying in town for other matches or were close enough to come back.

Greg Cook, 59, of Duncan, OK, won the M16 SAFS-EIC match with an aggregate score of 375-5X and earned his four introductory leg points. Cook fired a 96, 96, 98, 85 series in prone, prone rapid, sitting rapid and standing in the 200-yard, 400-point course of fire using AR15 rifles and ammunition provided by the CMP.

Randy Watson, 57, of Farmington, NM, placed second and also picked up his four introductory leg points, compiling a total score of 368-5X. Eric Guyton, 52, of Allen, OK, placed third with an aggregate score of 366-3X. Hayden Ramage, 18, of Bedford, TX, placed fourth and was the high scoring junior in the match, which was fired by a total of 24 SAFS participants.

Under clear skies on Sunday, 7 April, but winds ranging from 15 to 25 miles per hour, the Vintage Sniper Rifle Team Match tandem of William Fairless, 58, of Vienna, IL, and William Aten, 61, of Kingwood, TX, firing under the team name of “Bill Squared,” won the 2013 Oklahoma match with a team score of 387-7X. Fairless fired a 98-0X at 300 yards and 96-5X at 600 yards for a total individual score of 194-5X. Aten followed with scores of 97-0X and 96-2X (193-2X).

Team “Me and My Good Friend Bubba,” Eric Guyton and Kent Stonecipher, 60, of Ada, OK, placed second with a team score of 383-4X. Guyton fired a 195-2X and Stonecipher shot a 188-2X.

In third place, Steven Neilson and Kent Shomber, firing under the moniker “Too Confused,” fired a team aggregate of 380-4X. Neilson recorded a 195-3X and Shomber carded a 185-1X.

Gere Goodenberger, 49, of Claremore, OK, was the high individual competitor in the match, firing a 196-0X. His break-out scores were 99-0X at 300 and 97-0X at 600. Neilson was second and Guyton placed third, individually. A total of 21 teams participated in this year’s vintage sniper match.

Harold Pate led all shooters in the 100-yard M1Carbine Match with an aggregate score of 370-3X. Pate strung together a series of 94, 97, 93 and 86 in the prone, prone rapid, sitting rapid and standing course of fire on Friday, 5 April.

Robert Rathburn, 60, of Denver, CO, placed second in the Carbine match with a total score of 360-2X. Rathburn was also the high senior. David Tehan placed third with an aggregate score of 358-2X. The match was contested by 35 shooters.
