Small Arms Firing School Offered at 2014 Eastern CMP Games

By Ashley Brugnone, CMP Writer/Editor

NEWS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Date: 16 April 2014

CAMP BUTNER, N.C. – The Eastern CMP Games held at Camp Butner will again host a Small Arms Firing School (SAFS) and M16 Match for new and experienced shooters. A staple event at the National Matches in Camp Perry, Ohio, since 1918, over 80 students received classroom and hands-on involvement in a safe, fun and engaging environment for the first time at the 2013 Eastern Games, with even more expected at this year’s Games.

The SAFS instruction is geared toward new shooters, so no previous firearm experience is required. Students participating in the clinic will learn gun safety, target shooting skills, positioning, basic rifle mechanics and will also live fire on the range. Rock River AR15 rifles will be used during the course and are provided by the CMP.

The Small Arms Firing School includes a classroom portion, where students will learn the fundamentals of rifle safety, positioning, competition and much more.

Classroom discussion and hands-on demonstrations on the firing line will be conducted by qualified CMP staff and experienced CMP Military Instructors. The SAFS courses are open to U.S. citizens over the minimum age of 12, who are able to withstand the course of fire.

The conclusion of the school will feature the opportunity for students to take what they’ve learned and compete in a real M16 match. The competition will allow students to better learn range commands and see how a true match is conducted.

Participants will fire M16 rifles and fire in an official M16 match, with hands-on direction from CMP Master Instructors.

For more information on the Small Arms Firing School, visit http://www.thecmp.org/NM/SAFS.htm.

Other events scheduled to take place at the 2014 Eastern Games and Creedmoor Cup Matches include the Garand/Springfield/Vintage and Modern Military Match, As-Issued 1911 Pistol Match, Military & Police Service Pistol Match, Pistol Two-Man Team Match, EIC Pistol Match, 40 Shot Pistol Match, Rimfire Sporter Match, Carbine Match, Four-Man Team Match, 80-Shot Match and Vintage Sniper Match. Additionally, a Highpower Shooting Clinic, Pistol Clinic and the GSM New Shooter Clinic will also be available.

Don’t forget about the ever-popular CMP barbeque cookout for shooters and guests, held at the conclusion of Eastern Games! We hope to see you in North Carolina!
