I greatly enjoy the USAMU shooting tips in the newsletter and also being able to find them on-line.

SFC Singley:
It has been a while, but I sent CMP a request for a TFS article on possible means by which us "centrally endowed" (read that as 'fat') shooters might work ourselves into a useable sitting position. Spring is coming and I will be trying to get ready for matches. Your article has been copied and I will read it and work on trying the options you have provided. Thanks very much for your individual military service to our Nation and for your personal efforts to help other shooters improve our skills.

Really enjoyed the M1 for Vets article. Its really good to read something that was done for wounded vets. The match must have been a real wingding. Too cold for me. There is alot of history 1903 Springfield and the M1 . I had to sleep with my o3 for baning the butt on the deck in boot camp. Anyway thanks again for the story.

I enjoy the TFS. In fact, occasionally I like to print some of the articles to be able to review them in the future.

Whenever we come back in from the field it’s always a good day when “The First Shot” is in. I drill the guys in the fundamentals – many of which I learned and fine tuned at CMP matches – and it comes back in spades out here when it really counts!

Finally caught up with the October '06 story: A Rifle For Shifty. It was simply one of the best things I've read. As someone who had two uncles in combat in WWII, one air corps and one infantry, I will forever believe those men were heroes of the first echelon. Anything any of us can do for any of them is simply the least we can do.

The article about Bill Krilling was very good, a great shooter, coach and a gentlemen to boot!

Thanksfor the great stories and tips. Even old dogs can learn new tricks. This is great for keeping the CMP active.

CMP Awards $100,000 in College Scholarships to JROTC and ROTC Rifle Shooters

By Christine Elder, CMP Communications Manager

Kaitlin Chaffin received a $1000 CMP Scholarship. She was a member of the Siegel HS AJROTC Air Rifle team and placed eighth overall in the National JROTC Precision Championship this year.

The MISSION of the CMP is to promote firearm safety and marksmanship training for U. S. citizens with an emphasis on youth.  Each year, the Civilian Marksmanship Program supports many junior marksmanship programs such as its Three-Position Air Rifle Summer Camps, Junior Highpower Clinics, the National Match Highpower Support Program, the National JROTC Air Rifle Championship and postal program and the Army Air Rifle Championship and postal program.  One of the important ways that the CMP promotes marksmanship among youth is through its Scholarship Program that annually awards 100 $1000 college scholarships to JROTC and ROTC rifle shooters.

Kent Wilcox also received a $1000 CMP Scholarship. He was a member of the Shelby County HS MCJROTC Air Rifle team which one the National JROTC Precision Team Championship in 2006.

Through agreements that the CMP established with the U.S. Army Cadet Command, the U.S. Naval Education and Training Command and the USMC Training and Education Command, Army, Navy and Marine Corps JROTC or ROTC cadets who are enrolled in JROTC or ROTC and who have excellent academic and leadership records are eligible to apply for the scholarships.  Applicants also must be U. S. citizens, have a minimum 2.5 GPA, excel in rifle marksmanship and be a high school senior enrolled in JROTC or a college underclassman enrolled in ROTC.

The Civilian Marksmanship Program is proud to provide this scholarship program for JROTC and ROTC cadets who excel in rifle marksmanship.  Congratulations to the following 2007-2008 CMP College Scholarship winners listed below.

Derric Lee of Craigmont High School AJROTC received a $1000 CMP Scholarship. He will be attending Tennessee State University.

For additional information on the Scholarship Program or other CMP Junior Support Programs, email or call (419) 635-2141 ext. 1109.  The 2008-2009 CMP Scholarship Regulations and Applications Forms will be posted in January 2008 on the CMP web site at
