The Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) invites you and your club rifle team to participate in the CMP’s Monthly Matches. The matches will take place on 19 May, 22 Sept, 27 Oct and 17 Nov at the CMP’s Marksmanship Centers North and South. The competitions will feature a Junior Air Rifle 3x20, 60 Shots Air Rifle Standing, 60 Shots Air Pistol, a 20 shot Novice Prone stage a National Match Air Rifle 20 Shot Standing, Garand Course and 3x20 events. Participation Continues to Grow at CMP Eastern Games & DeMille Wins Three-Gun Aggregate Title

CAMP BUTNER, NC – The CMP Eastern Games, held at Camp Butner, a North Carolina Army National Guard training center, grew by five percent in 2012 as 341 participants took part in traditional games events including historical military rifle, rimfire sporter and pistol competitions.

New shooters were given an opportunity to participate in the morning clinic and fire a military rifle match in the afternoon of 5 May.

Dennis DeMille, 47, of Oceanside, CA, captured the John C. Garand rifle match crown in the first leg of winning the overall Three-Gun Aggregate. DeMille fired a pair of clean 100-3X prone slow and rapid stages, combined with a 95-0X in standing for a winning aggregate score of 295-6X. He was followed by Franco Scarpino, 65, of Pembroke, MA (289-2X) and Alan Bulejcik, 53, of Worcester, MA (288-7X).

Scarpino was the high senior in the match and Robert Hudson II, 16, of Halifax, VA, was the high junior in the match with an aggregate score of 278-4X. Hudson finished 29th overall among all competitors.

Glendale “Don” Rutherford, 60, of Tallapoosa, GA, took first place in the Springfield rifle match in an X-ring tiebreaker over Douglas Armstrong, 52, of Lexington, NC, 290-7X to 290-4X, respectively. Rutherford and Armstrong fired clean prone slow stages. Armstrong took a one-point advantage in prone rapid, (97-96) and Rutherford returned the favor in offhand (94-93). The Georgian’s difference-making Xs came in prone slow (2) and standing (1).

David Thompson, 50, of Keyser, WV, was just one point behind in third (289-10X). Rutherford was also high senior and Hudson II was high junior (274-1X), at 27th overall in the Springfield match.

Sean Leighton, 49, of Mechanicsburg, PA, won the Vintage Military rifle match using his Swedish Mauser, compiling an aggregate score of 289-10X. Leighton fired clean prone slow and rapid stages (100-5X each) and capped his scoring with an 89-0X in offhand.

Rutherford, the high senior, placed second with a 287-5X and DeMille took third with a 285-6X. Rutherford fired a clean prone slow and DeMille cleaned his rapid stage. Robert Hudson II swept all three GSM high junior rankings with a score of 277-4X in Vintage Military rifle, finishing 12th overall with his Swiss K-31.

The GSM (Garand-Springfield-Vintage Military) Three-Gun winner, DeMille, amassed an 862-16X combined aggregate score in the matches, outdistancing Rutherford (854-17X) and Thompson (852-16X) in top-three scoring.

Barry Waits, 57, of Waxhaw, NC, was the overall As-Issued M1 Garand EIC winner with an aggregate score of 387-10X out of a possible 400. Rick Whitaker, 60, of Fayetteville, NC, was the high non-Distinguished competitor in the match, firing a 375-3X. Dale Martin, 55, of Circleville, OH, placed third overall after a four-way tiebreaker with a 371-7X. Rick was awarded a Bushmaster rifle donated by Bushmaster Firearms. Bill Aten, 60, of Kingwood, TX, also fired a 371-7X, but was edged by Martin, 84-83 in the offhand stage. Robert Snipes, 46, of Latta, SC, finished fifth with a 371-6X and Ira Jones, 67, of Hubert, NC, placed sixth with a 371-4X.

Snipes was second in non-Distinguished scoring and Robert Wendt, 57 of Seymour, WI, placed third in the leg points award race with an aggregate score of 370-6X. In addition to Whitaker, Snipes and Wendt, four other shooters earned Distinguished leg points in the match. Whitaker was the high senior and Gabe Rampy, 14, of Bremen, GA was the high junior in the match with a score of 352-7X. Rampy was 30th overall in the field of 82 shooters.
William Bowling, 55, of Fayetteville, NC, won the M1 Carbine match with an aggregate score of 360-4X. CMP Vice Chairman Cris Stone presented Bowling with the match winner’s plaque.

A total of 99 carbine shooters participated in the match. Aten was the high senior and Jessica Hudson, 13, of Halifax, VA (Robert Hudson’s younger sister), was the high junior in the match with a score of 354-1X, ranking an impressive 10th overall.

The CMP held a drawing for the donated Dupage Stocks and Criterion Barrels. The top 10 individuals in the Garand, Springfield and Vintage Military matches were put in separate cups. The M1 Garand Stock for the Vintage Military Match went to Dave Thompson, the M1 Garand Stock for the Springfield Match went to Don Rutherford. He donated the stock to the M1 For Vets. The M1 Garand Stock for the Garand match went to Timothy Adamson, of Hueytown, AL. The top twenty names from the Garand match were put in a cup and a drawing was help for the donated Criterion Barrel. The winner was William Ellis, of Slough, England.

Douglas Armstrong and Kenneth Clowdis, 65, of Randleman, NC, competing under the name “Armstrong/Clowdis,” won the Vintage Sniper Rifle Team match with a combined aggregate score of 390-13X. Armstrong fired 100-6X/96-1X and Clowdis carded twin 97’s with 2 and 4 X’s at 300 and 600 yards respectively.

The match pits two shooters against other teams of two with each shooter given an opportunity to fire 10 shots at 300 yards and 10 shots at 600 yards. At each distance the shooter’s target is exposed for 20 seconds, during which time the non-shooting partner/spotter makes shooting condition calls to the shooter. In unison, the targets are pulled into the pits and marked during a 20-second pause prior to being raised for the next shot.

In second place was “Hardleg 1”, comprised of Paul Patel, 52, of Damascus, MD, and Howard Burrill, 51, of Mt. Airy, MD, who fired a team score of 389-16X. Patel (198-8X) was the high individual scorer of the match. Third place went to “Team Stumpy’s”, SSgt Brad Lang, 27, USMC and Erik Feild, 30, US Army, with a team score of 384-14X.

He defeated veteran shooter Ron Villanueva, 47, of Parma Heights, OH, in an X-count tiebreaker. Villanueva placed second with an aggregate score of 594-39X.

Rimfire Sporter is fired with .22 caliber sporter equipment that has not been designed for or adapted to competitive target shooting (thumbhole stocks, fluted barrels, shooting coats, etc.). The match was created as an entrée into competitive shooting but with the familiarity of store-bought .22 rifles. Rifles may be semi-automatic, bolt guns or the newer tactical .22 platform. The course of fire includes unlimited sighters in a 10-minute period followed by 10 shots each in slow-fire and rapid-fire prone, sitting or kneeling and standing positions in prescribed timeframes. Prone and sitting stages are fired at 50 yards and standing at 25 yards.

Guay’s performance included clean (100-point) prone slow, prone rapid and standing slow stages. He dropped one point in sitting slow-fire, two in sitting rapid-fire and three in standing rapid. William Flagg, Jr., 52, of Ashland, VA, placed third in T-Class scoring with a total score of 592-32X.

In O-Class (open sights), Tracy Grissett, 51, of Lottsburg, VA, fired a 576-13X to take first place. Bill Aten placed second with an aggregate score of 575-18X, edging junior shooter Jessica Hudson in an X-ring tiebreaker (575-17X).

There were two entries in the Tactical Class – William Ellis, 47, of Slough, England, who fired a 572-15X and John Kerrigan, 61, of Annapolis, MD, who compiled a 540-8X.

The high-scoring senior in Rimfire Sporter overall was Samuel Ballard, 63, of Manteo, NC, who competed in the T-Class and fired a 585-30X.

Remington donated a rifle to the Best Center Shot in the last standing rapid-fire stage in the T-Class. Dan Henk, of Prattville, AL, won the Remington rifle. Savage Arms also donated a rifle to the Best Center Shot in the last standing rapid-fire stage in the O-Class. Dirk Ahle, of Alexandria, VA, won the Savage Rifle.
