Sun Shines on Large Crowds and Worthy Competitors During 2014 Eastern CMP Games
By Ashley Brugnone, CMP Writer

Sunny skies shined down on the bright faces of the eager Eastern Games competitors in Camp Butner, NC, May 2-6.

CAMP BUTNER, NC – In May, over 400 competitors traveled to the beautiful wooded lands of North Carolina to compete in the 7th annual Eastern CMP Games at Camp Butner. The event combined popular CMP Games rifle matches with exciting pistol matches and clinics for new and experienced marksmen to hone their skills.

Samuel Payne had an outstanding performance during the Rimfire Sporter Match, claiming the overall award and the High Junior award for the T-Class.

The weather, unlike last year’s cold and gloomy climate, provided near perfect warmth and sunshine to competitors and guests. Events held during the Games included the Garand, Springfield and Modern Military Matches, As-Issued 1911 Pistol Match, Military & Police Service Pistol Match, Rimfire Sporter Match, Carbine Match and Vintage Sniper Match, among others.

Andy Miller, 39, of Coshocton, OH, was the overall winner of the M16 match, held at the conclusion of the Small Arms Firing School. The match, in only its second year at Camp Butner boasted over 70 competitors.

Andy Miller was the overall shooter in the M16 Match. The match coincided with the growing Small Arms Firing School at Eastern Games.

Douglas Armstrong, 55, of Lexington, NC, came out on top as the overall Three Gun Aggregate winner. Armstrong was also the winner of the John C. Garand Match and part of the winning two-man Vintage Sniper Match team. Kenneth Clowdis, 67, of Randleman, NC, comprised the other half of the champion team, known as “Dos Hombres.”

The team “Dos Hombres” led the popular Vintage Sniper Match. Douglas Armstrong (right center), who also won the Three Gun Aggregate, battled alongside teammate Kenneth Clowdis (left center) for the win. Armstrong was also the overall individual in the match.

Glendale Rutherford, 62, of Tallapoosa, GA, earned the overall Four Gun Aggregate honor, along with claiming the High Senior and Overall awards in the Vintage Military Match.

In pistol action, Steve Huff, 48, of Hardy, VA, led the 40 Shot and the EIC Service Pistol matches. Huff was closely followed in each match by Christopher Roberts, 41, of Charlotte, NC, who was the overall individual in the Pistol Team Match.

Steve Huff showed excellent perseverance as he earned the overall awards in the 40 Shot Pistol Match and the EIC Service Pistol Match.

Notable juniors at the Eastern Games included Samuel Payne, 15, of Kingston, GA, who was the overall winner in the T-Class during the Rimfire Sporter Match, as well as Ryan Ward, 17, of Greenville, NC, who was the High Junior in both the Springfield and John C. Garand Matches. Jessica Hudson, 15, of Halifax, VA, represented the female junior shooters, earning the High Woman award in the O-Class during the Rimfire Sporter Match and becoming the High Junior in the Carbine Match.
