Troy Lawton Wins President’s Rifle Trophy Match in Civilian-Heavy Final

By Steve Cooper, CMP Marketing Manager

CAMP PERRY, OH – Troy Lawton fought off a determined defending champion Jared Perry to capture the 2013 President’s Rifle Trophy Match here on Monday, 29 July with a qualification-plus-final aggregate score of 395-18X.
Troy Lawton, of Columbus, Georgia led all shooters to capture the 2013 President’s Rifle Trophy Match with a qualification-plus-final aggregate score of 395-18X.

Lawton, 50, of Columbus, GA, maintained his three-point lead in the 10-shot final in front of a couple hundred spectators at the 600-yard line on Rodriguez Range. Perry, 33, of Porterville, CA, finished with an aggregate score of 392-15X. Last year Perry set the match-plus-final record with a 398-16X.

“It was a great day, a fun match,” Lawton said, shortly after being doused by the requisite celebratory cooler of ice water. “Offhand went well but I had one peek into the nine ring at 600,” he said, referring to the third stage of qualifying on Viale Range.
Defending President’s Rifle Trophy Match champion and match record holder, Jared Perry, of Porterville, California, couldn’t overcome a three-point deficit to Troy Lawton and placed second in this year’s match.

Lawton shot an offhand score of 98-4X; cleaned his 300-yard rapid fire string (100) with 4Xs, and fired a 99-6X in his qualifying 600-yard prone slow fire stage prior to the final.

“I love the final, and just had fun with it,” an elated Lawton said after picking up his trophy plaque while being showered with congratulations from friends and fellow shooters.
Justin Utley, of Mineola, Texas, fired a 100-2X in the President’s shoot-off, scoring an aggregate of 392-11X for third place. CMP Vice Chairman Cris Stone congratulates Utley at the conclusion of ceremonies on the firing line.

Lawton led a civilian-heavy field of competitors in the final. There were 10 non-military finalists, earning places in the top six positions, including Justin Utley, 28, of Mineola, TX (392-11X), who finished third. He fired a 100-2X in the final, tying Perry overall but dropping to third in an X-ring tiebreaker. Junior Isaac Dow, 20, of Grand Junction, CO, placed fourth (392-11X).
Junior competitor Isaac Dow, of Grand Junction, Colorado, placed fourth (392-11X) and was the high junior competitor in the match.
