Freedom Group’s Bushmaster Firearms International Remembers Its Roots by Supporting Shooting Sports

By Steve Cooper, CMP Writer

CAMP PERRY, OHIO – As part of the one of the world’s largest group of firearms and ammunition marketers, Bushmaster Firearms still hasn’t grown too big to remain supportive of popular target-shooting activities like the CMP’s National Trophy and Games Matches.
Ken Roxburgh, left, and Jarrod McDevitt, right, awarded the Bushmaster Cups to Christopher Calumpong, 2nd from right, and Dakota Haag. Bushmaster Firearms donated both the Overall Bushmaster Cup and the Junior Bushmaster Cup.

Established as a quiet operation 32 years ago in Windham, Maine, the family-oriented company grew steadily over the years and in 2006 caught the eye of Wall Street giant Cerberus Capital Management who purchased the company. Former owner Richard Dyke said at the time that Bushmaster had grown to the point where it needed someone with deeper pockets to manage its potential growth.
SGT Sherri Jo Gallagher, USA was the High Woman in the President’s Rifle Match with a score of 394-21X. SGT Gallagher received a Bushmaster DCM-XR Competition Rifle donated by Bushmaster Firearms International. Mr. Tom Hughes, NRA National Match Assistant Coordinator, was the presenter.

Since then Cerberus has formed a holding company, the Freedom Group of Companies, which is a now a Who’s Who in the firearms, ammunition and accessories industry including Remington, Marlin, Bushmaster, DPMS Panther Arms, Harrington & Richardson, New England Firearms, L.C. Smith, The Parker Gun, EOTAC, INTC and Barnes Bullets.
2010 Mountain Man Trophy Winner SFC Norman Anderson, USAR, poses with his Bushmaster DCM Rifle donated by Bushmaster Firearms International.

In addition to supporting the CMP-USMC Junior Highpower Clinic pizza party, this year Bushmaster provided a DCM-XR Competition AR15 Rifle to CMP which was given to SFC Norman Anderson, USAR, winner of the Mountain Man Trophy. SFC Anderson was the individual firing the highest aggregate scores in the National Trophy Individual Match and National Trophy Team Rifle Match.
Bushmaster Firearms also donates a Bushmaster DCM-XR competition rifle to the High Eligible Competitor in the Eastern & Western M1 Garand Special EIC Matches. John Marx, Conifer, Colorado, fired a 371-2X in the 2009 Western Games M1 Garand Special EIC Match. Marx is shown here firing his K-31 Swiss rifle in the Vintage Military Rifle Match.

According to the Freedom Group, it is the world’s leading innovator, designer, manufacturer and marketer of firearms, ammunition and related products for the hunting, shooting sports, law enforcement and military markets. The combined companies have been in business for 193 years; operate 15 facilities; sell products in more than 60 countries; employ more than 2,500 workers.
