CMP North Marksmanship Center Expansion Underway

By Ashley Brugnone, CMP Writer/Editor

CAMP PERRY, OH – The $1.1 million dollar expansion of the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) Marksmanship Center at Camp Perry is underway as construction crews tirelessly work to even further improve the already world-class air gun range for shooters and spectators.

An expansion of the CMP North Marksmanship Center began in early June 2013 and is expected to be completed within the year. The addition will include a covered walkway entrance (right center), new check-in area and retail store.

The range expansion was approved by the CMP Board of Directors after the space within the building for guests and competitors to walk, change and otherwise function was deemed inadequate. After bids were placed, the CMP hired Studer-Obringer from New Washington, OH, as general contractors to oversee the project.

Plans of an expansion were approved when it became apparent that the growing number of air rifle and pistol competitors would call for more space within the range building. The million-dollar expansion will allow greater flow for shooters and guests during competitions.

Some new range improvements are inspired by CMP’s South Marksmanship Center in Anniston, AL, including a covered entrance, check-in area, changing rooms and classrooms. There will also be some features unique to only the North Marksmanship Center, such as a retail store area and the building’s distinct architectural design. Construction on the range expansion began in early June 2013.

So far, work that is roughed-in includes:

  • Covered walkway
  • Structural steal studs
  • Plumbing
  • Electric
  • Masonry work
  • Drywall

Yet to be completed:

  • Roofing over the new entrance/check-in area
  • Flooring
  • Light fixtures

At this point, around 50 percent of the project is completed. Because the air range itself is not disturbed by the development, Open Public Shooting, Monthly Matches and other air rifle events are still being conducted as usual. The project is on track to be completed in December 2013.
