Sarge’s Death by Chocolate

Yes, it’s odd that The First Shot, a magazine dedicated to covering marksmanship, would publish a recipe. Yet, perhaps caught in our own bias that good shooters don’t make good chefs, we find ourselves in this awkward position.

After a long day of seminars and workshops, CMP staff was enjoying an evening of steaks and Country-Western music at the Flying W Ranch with the rest of the participants of the National Coaches Conference. It was a time to relax, eat, talk, and apparently trade recipes. John Martin, a high school rifle coach from Arkansas, told us of an arcane mixture that he used to quiet noisy juniors. According to Martin, the overly enthusiastic youths could not resist the allure of the chocolate concoction, and after stuffing themselves silly, they would immediately fall asleep.

Two weeks after the conference, he sent Christine Prentice, the CMP’s Competition Manager, the recipe. So here it is.

We have to admit that the recipe does take a rather manly approach; with the exception of the oil and the coffee, everything is done in bulk. There’s no need to measure out half a cup of Maraschino cherries. Just add the whole jar. And then there’s the simple, get-to-the-point instructions. No “bake for 45 minutes.” Cook until done.

2 Dark Chocolate Cake Mixes
6 eggs
1 ½ Cups Oil
2 2/3 Cups Coffee
3 – 4 Bags Crushed Nuts

Butter Pan
Mix & Add Ingredients
Add 1 Jar of Maraschino Cherries
Cook Until Done
Score Cake and Add: 1 Large Jar Carmel Ice Cream Topping, 1 Large Jar Chocolate Ice Cream Topping, 1 Medium Bag Miniature Marshmallows.
Rebake until Marshmallows are brown & melted

Eat with Vanilla Ice Cream
