I. “Rick’s Picks”

1) “Jimmy Stewart, Bomber Pilot” by Starr Smith. Of all the celebrities who served their country during World War II - and they were legion - Jimmy Stewart was unique. Seeing war on the horizon, Jimmy Stewart, at the height of his fame after Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, had enlisted several months earlier. Jimmy Stewart: Bomber Pilot chronicles the stars long journey to become a bomber pilot in combat. Author Starr Smith recounts how Stewarts first battles were with the Air Corps high command, who insisted on keeping the naturally talented pilot out of harms way as an instructor pilot for B-17 Flying Fortresses and B-24 Liberators. We learn how, by 1944, Stewart managed to get assigned to a Liberator squadron that was deploying to England to join the mighty Eighth Air Force - and how, once in the thick of it, he rose to command his own squadron and flew twenty combat missions, including one to Berlin. Near-new, $14.95

2) “Silent Warrior: The Marine Sniper’s Vietnam Story” by Charles Henderson. ***Autographed Book!!*** Now, the incredible story of a remarkable Marine continues-with harrowing, never-before-published accounts of courage and perseverance. These are the powerful stories of a man who rose to greatness not for personal gain or glory, but for duty and honor. A rare inside look at the U.S. Marine's most challenging missions-and the one man who made military history. Inscribed by Mr. Henderson, $30.00 REDUCED to $25.00

II. World War II

1) “Band of Brothers” by Stephan Ambrose. Ambrose’s most well-known book about the men of Easy Company of the 101st Airborne Division, and basis for the well-known mini-series. Trade ppk. Ex. condition, $4.95

2) “Flags of Our Fathers” by James Bradley. In Flags of Our Fathers, James Bradley draws on those documents to retrace the lives of his father and the men of his Company. Following these men's paths to Iwo Jima, James Bradley has written a classic story of the heroic battle for the Pacific's most crucial island—an island riddled with Japanese tunnels and 22,000 fanatic defenders who would fight to the last man. Trade ppk. Ex.-near new, $6.95

3) “The Shadow Divers” by Robert Kuson. In the fall of 1991, not even two courageous divers were prepared for what they found 230 feet below the surface, in the frigid Atlantic waters sixty miles off the coast of New Jersey: a World War II German U-boat, its ruined interior a macabre wasteland of twisted metal, tangled wires, and human bones–all buried under decades of accumulated sediment. No identifying marks were visible on the submarine or the few artifacts brought to the surface. No historian, expert, or government had a clue as to which U-boat the men had found. VG-E trade ppk. $5.00

4) “Embracing Defeat: Japan in the Wake of World War II” by John Dower. Following his National Book Critics Award winning War Without Mercy on the Pacific theater, Dower (history, Massachusetts Institute of Technology) examines the immediate aftermath of World War II. He draws on a wide range of Japanese sources to illuminate how the shattering defeat and six years of US military occupation affected every level of society in ways no one anticipated. Trade ppk. VG-E (owner name on side) $5.00

5) “Pearl Harbor: America’s Call to Arms” by the editors of “Life” Magazine. In World War II (and for sometime after that), “Life” was the greatest pictorial magazine. 2) “The War for the Union: The Organized War, 1864-65. By Allan Nevins. Allan Nevins completes his masterly study of the American Civil War. The qualities of clarity, absolute command of the sources, and full recognition of the drama inherent in the theme, which have distinguished the previous volumes can all be found here as well. And there is something more: a communication without sentimentality of the heartbreak of this national tragedy for the victors as well as the vanquished. ("He seemed," wrote one observer of President Lincoln, "to be in mourning for all the dead of all the endless battles.") Nevins provides the reader with an analysis of the social and economic effects of the conflict which is outstanding for wisdom and depth. Allan Nevins won the National Book Award for this book. EX-Near new, $10.00 REDUCED to $8.00

3) “Battlefields of the Civil War”, by William Davis. A large, magazine-sized trade paperback. 13 of the biggests and most important battles of the Civil War. LARGE numbers of drawings maps, weapons, uniforms are pictured, nearly all in full color. An excellent companion book to larger histories of the Civil War. 250+ pages. Near new, $10.50.

4) “Nothing Like It In the World” by Stephen Ambrose. On May 10, 1869, telegraphers sent the word done from Promontory Point, Utah, throughout the nation, signaling the completion of what Walt Whitman referred to as "the road between Europe and Asia." The transcontinental railroad, which connected the vast American territories, cut the trip from New York City to San Francisco from many months to seven days. Ambrose's (Undaunted Courage) epic account, diligently and powerfully read by DeMunn, details the incredible mobilization of manpower and financing that was "the very embodiment of system." He tells it all with verve: the financial finagling, the impulse to simplify by "exterminating" Native Americans, the backbreaking work and the fierce competition between railroad companies that fueled the effort. Near new hardback. $8.50

V. Vietnam, Post-WWII, Military History, Space

1) “Storm over Iraq” by Richard Hallion. Military historian Hallion has written the definitive text on the role of air power in the Gulf War. His access to recently declassified materials and to current postwar analyses has significantly dated both Norman Friedman's Desert Victory (Naval Inst. Press, 1991) and U.S. News & World Report's Triumph Without Victory (Random House, 1992). The early chapters detail the role of air power from World War I through Noriega's capture in Panama. The main body of the text describes the air war in the Persian Gulf and shows how U.S. Air Force planning and modern technology drastically shortened the final land phase of combat. The most interesting sections are the conclusion and appendixes, which offer much new information from personal sources and military studies. Near new, $10.00 REDUCED to $8.00

2) “Going to the Wars” by Max Hastings. Hastings is a well-known historian, with books on D-Day, the Falklands and other wars. He also has a well-deserved reputation as a war correspondent, seeing such places first-hand as Belfast, Biafra, Vietnam, Cyprus and many other places. This book is his personal memoir of his service, which went back to 1963. Ppk. Ex. $3.95

3) “A Man on the Moon” by Andrew Chalkin. A mission-by-mission story of the Apollo space program, written with the approval of the astronauts. Chalkin doesn’t hide anything, detailing the successes and professional and personal failures of the program and the pilots. In my opinion, one of the BEST books currently available on Apollo. Trade ppk. Ex. $5.95

4) “Moon Shot: The Inside Story of America’s Race to the Moon” by Alan Shepard and Deke Slayton. The never-before-told story of the courage, dedication, and teamwork that made the journey to the moon possible--an intense human drama of the sacrifices and risks asked of a remarkable group of astronauts. Shepard and Slayton, part of the pioneering space program from the beginning, tell this fascinating inside story. 32 pages of photos. Near new, 12.50

The best feature articles in over 50 years, 101 articles in all. including a generous helping of pieces from World War II. All articles are printed as originally published, so you can see who was wrong and who was right in predicting the future of aviation. A fascinating book! Ex. $10.95

3) “Going Downtown: The War Against Hanoi and Washington” by Jack Broughton. Broughton flew the F-105 (AKA “The Thud”) on dozens of dangerous missions against heavily-defended North Vietnamese targets. He describes evading fighters, missiles and anti-aircraft fire. He also talks about the restrictions, often petty in nature, which prevented American pilots from doing a better job of destroying North Vietnamese military targets. Ex. $6.00

1) “The Age of Napoleon” by Will and Ariel Durant. In this, the eleventh volume in the critically acclaimed series "The Story of Civilization," Dr. Will and Ariel Durant have compiled a masterly recount of the incredible sequence of events that led Europe out of the Enlightenment and into the Age of Democracy. Hi Rick,
I'll take both.
Email with details.

El Alamein, Kasserine Pass, Poland, Belgium, Normandy on D-Day, the disastrous Russian front—von Luck fought with and against some of the best soldiers in the world. Fwd. By Stephan Ambrose. New, $12.00

2) “Blood Red Snow”, by Gunter Koschorrek. For the German soldier fighting under Hitler, keeping a diary was strictly forbidden.
