I'm planning a trip this weekend from Nashville. Friday night, my boy and I will head out after school to Anniston and spend the night, getting up early to head to the CMP store. After we conduct some business there, it's off to Tuscaloosa to see some SEC action.
As far as the store visit is concerned, what I'm looking for is a nice in appearance, potential for accurate, and reliable Garand. I have a near mint Carbine that I inherited when I was a kid that is an Inland without a bayonet lug. The Garand is to compliment the carbine.
I'll go as far to say that price is not a problem, provided it's $1,500 or less.
Is the staff there able to help select anything or is it pretty much up to me to do all the leg work? I've done some research here but to be honest, it's a little overwhelming given I haven't actually been able to take pen to paper so to speak by not actually having seen what I'm looking for. I am looking for a rifle that is safe to shoot but is easy on the eyes.
If anyone else is going to be in the area this Saturday, the 24th, let me know if you can be of any help.

+1 for Leon.
If there are any Springfield Armory service grade specials I'd take a look at them first. |

| +2 for Leon and the Springfield Armory service grade specials. Service grade with a new stock. Great looking and should be a great shooter. |

Is Leon a Scotch drinker by any chance?
Just kidding, thanks for the info guys. I'll be patient but am looking forward to the trip, if nothing else just for the chance to go by the store in person.

He won't tell me.
Orest, on the other hand, drinks Grey Goose Vodka (he says).
Just make sure you have all of your paperwork (club card, etc).

I don't know if he's a scotch drinker, but he'll dang sure eat a donut! :-) Whenever I go to the south store, I always take them a couple dozen donuts. It seems that their favorite supplier is a place called Lamar's, which is only about 10 blocks from the store. Google 'em for the address.
And enjoy your visit to the south store! :-)

| I went to the South Store today. I would say do not waste the gas. The inventory is very depeleted. The Carbines were all the same old left overs that no one ever wants. The Garands are poor and there are no more Springfields Specials at $795. I was very disappointed to say the least. Hopefully they get those Greek Air Force Carbines soon. I am slso looking forward to the nice Garands that were unboxed at the GCA convention. Today was the first time I ever went and left empty handed. |

I was there today also, and have to agree totally with you. Absolutely the poorest selection of M1's I have ever seen at either store. They should be embarassed to put some of those out for sale. DO NOT waste your time or gas at this time or you will be extremely disappointed. We bought two field grades, but only because we did not want to consider this trip a total waste. The guaged ok, and the wood was borderline acceptable. The only good news, is that we did manage to max out on our ammo limits. |

You can always find a nice Garand at the South Store. You may have to buy a stock set too if you want it to look real pretty .
I do consider a Garand for $445.00 or $495.00 nice. That leaves plenty of room to buy a new stock set and still have a great deal.
Those almost new condition rifles last year spoiled a lot of people. The ones sorted by the GCA members will spoil even more people.
When I was at the store on October 8 & 9,there were plenty of good Garands on the racks .Several that I found would have been service grade except for the wood.
Any day is a good day at the South Store. |

I was there the same day and the selection was decent. Today, however, was a different story. Leon also said he was going to have to pull a bunch of Garands from the store to satisfy mail orders. Those people considering a trip should hold off. I would normally agree with your any day theory if I had not seen the very poor selection today. |

Thanks for the heads up. We're still going to make the trip down there, if nothing else, to actually get a first-hand look at the store and the operation. It's a getaway weekend for the boy and me and he's going to Tuscaloosa that afternoon to watch the Bama/UT game. He doesn't know anything about it yet so it will be a big surprise.

Wulf77,granted you were there since I was and it is your opinion the selection was poor.
First,to have as many Garands to choose from as the South Store offers on any given day, well it's a good selection to me.
Second,I can walk in behind somebody who just looked at the selection, find a very good rifle and show it to the person who just walked the racks and he'll say"where did you find that one".Believe me it's happened more than once.
The trick is to pick up and look at every one of them. And in particular the rifles with rough wood will sometimes have an excellent barrel.
My observation two weeks ago is that the HRA's looked better than the SA's but most of the rifles had rough wood. And we all know that a lot of folks judge the rifle by cosmetic appearance of the stock alone.
Not everybody needs or wants a match grade barrel either. Most Garands with muzzles up to 3 as long as they have a good throat reading of 5 or under will still perform nicely for the average shooter.
Good choice Montie and good luck on finding a neat rifle. When you're looking for a keeper,it's not hard to do.Most likely, you'll find more than one.Remember you have a friend in Leon. |

| To each his own, MK. I will tell you the selection is so low that they removed some racks from the showroom completely. |
