I was under the impression that "soft ball" referred to the common practice of loading the 230 grain FMJ to less than the original "hardball" spec, as issue type "hardball" use is no longer required. Am I correct in this assumption? Thanks, Andy
When I started shooting pistol in the Navy in 1974 we referred to the military issue ammo (230 grain FMJ either std or match) as Hardball. Softball was used to decribe target loads with lead bullets or the Winchester match stuff we got with 185 grain FMJ bullets that was loaded at around 750 fps. So the term softball has been around way before they stopped issuing ammo for Leg matches.
I recently shot my second 2700 and I must say I was again disappointed in my performance. I shot several misses or near misses at the 25 yard line. It is a humbling experience to say the least. BUT my .45 was tested by people who know what they are doing, and it will not hold the black at 50 yards. YEAH the pistol might be somewhat to blame, but it's mostly the operator.
