By Christine Elder; Manager, CMP Communications

The Inaugural Eastern CMP Games and Creedmoor Cup Matches, which will take place at Camp Butner, North Carolina, on 5-13 May 2007, offer an exciting nine-day schedule of training and competition activities. All shooters, especially shooters who live in the eastern and southeastern parts of the U. S., are encouraged to make plans to attend the first east coast version of the Western Creedmoor Cup and CMP Games Matches. The matches will be at Camp Butner, North Carolina, a National Guard installation north of Durham, North Carolina. The North State Shooting Club, whose home range is at Camp Butner, will host the Matches. Creedmoor Sports Inc. will sponsor the Creedmoor Cup Matches and the CMP will sponsor the CMP Games Matches.

The official match program for the combined Eastern CMP Games and Creedmoor Cup Matches is now posted on the CMP website at http://www.odcmp.com/Competitions/EasternGames.htm. After you review the program, you can enter any of the CMP and Creedmoor matches on-line at http://clubs.odcmp.com/cgi-bin/matchInfo.cgi?matchID=1841. Anyone who wants additional information can also call the CMP at 419-635-2141, ext. 1102 (email competitions@odcmp.com) or call Dennis DeMille at Creedmoor Sports, 1-800-273-3366 (email demille@creedmoorsports.com).

A free CMP Garand-Springfield-Military (GSM) Rifle Clinic will be taught on Saturday, 5 May for all competitors.

The combined program offers nine full days of clinics and competition events that offer something for everyone from beginning shooters to national championship contenders. The program begins on Saturday, 5 May, with a CMP Garand-Springfield-Military (GSM) Rifle Clinic. This free clinic will be taught by Richard Whiting, a CMP GSM Master Instructor and lead instructor in the CMP National Matches clinics. The GSM Rifle Clinic includes lecture, demonstration and dry fire position work. Clinic students will also learn about the John C. Garand course of fire and how to shoot it as well as how to score and pull targets. All shooters who plan to shoot in the CMP Games Garand, Springfield or Military Rifle Matches, especially any shooters who will be firing these matches for the first time, are encouraged to take advantage of this clinic.

The Eastern CMP Games Garand, Springfield and Vintage Military Rifle Matches will be fired on Sunday, 6 May, and Monday, 7 May. Competitors can elect to fire two of the three matches (Garand, Springfield or Military Rifle) during those two days. Competitors can fire the same event on both Sunday and Monday, one event on Sunday and a second event on Monday or they can fire one event on either Sunday or Monday. On Tuesday, 8 May, competitors can fire in a special CMP As-Issued M1 Garand EIC Match. The top 10% of eligible competitors earn “introductory” 4-point legs or credits toward earning the Distinguished Rifleman Badge. At the 2006 Western CMP Games, five competitors earned their first EIC credit points to start them on their quests to win the Distinguished Rifleman Badge. All CMP Games match firing begins promptly each day at 8:00 AM so all competitors must plan to arrive early enough each day to check in, receive scorecards, draw ammo, have their rifles inspected and be squadded for the day’s match.

Competitors have an opportunity to fire in up to three of four CMP Games Events during the Eastern CMP Games.

All competitors will receive Eastern CMP Games T-shirts, ammo for the Garand and Springfield matches and have an opportunity to earn CMP bronze, silver or gold achievement medals. After each day’s match, achievement medals will be presented to competitors who achieve award cut scores. The CMP will also award plaques recognizing the High Competitor and High Senior in each of the four events. A BBQ lunch will take place after Sunday’s matches to welcome competitors to the Eastern CMP Games Events.

CMP Staff from Anniston, Alabama, will attend the Eastern CMP Games and display a truckload of government surplus rifles including M1 Carbines, M1 Garands and Kimber M82 Rifles.

The CMP rifle sales table will open for business after each day’s match is over, at approximately 2:00 PM, on Sunday, 6 May through Wednesday, 9 May. A whole truckload of M1 Carbine, M1 Garand, Kimber M82 and other government surplus rifles will be available for inspection and tagging. M2 ball ammunition will also be available for purchase in case lots. Any U. S. citizen who is eligible to purchase a CMP rifle is welcome to come to Camp Butner’s Range for this rifle purchase opportunity, whether or not they are competing in the Eastern CMP Games Matches.

Team Creedmoor firing member, CWO3 Dennis DeMille, USMC (Ret)., explains the sitting position during the Highpower Rifle Shooting Clinic held at the Western CMP Games and Creedmoor Cup Matches in November 2006.

The Creedmoor Cup events get underway on Wednesday, 9 May, with a highpower rifle shooting clinic. The USAMU Service Rifle Team and Team Creedmoor firing member, CWO3 Dennis DeMille, USMC (Ret.), the 2003 National Service Rifle Champion and 2005 National Highpower Rifle Champion, will conduct this clinic that also is open to all interested shooters. The clinic includes lectures, demonstrations and dry fire training with lots of hands-on coaching during the dry-fire sessions.

The first Creedmoor Cup Match is a Practice Match, fired over the National Match Course, with sighters, on Thursday, 10 May. Friday’s event features a Creedmoor EIC Match that can be fired with either a service rifle or a match rifle. Non-Distinguished service rifle shooters, of course, are eligible to earn EIC credit points.

The major event of the Creedmoor Cup Matches is the Creedmoor Cup, an 80-shot 4X20 event that will be fired on Saturday, 12 May. At the conclusion of the Creedmoor Cup Match, a BBQ dinner will be served along with the distribution of awards for Creedmoor Cup events and the Creedmoor Cup participation prizes. This will be one of the largest door prize giveaways ever seen at a highpower rifle match – up to $15,000 worth. These prizes are provided by CREEDMOOR SPORTS and other sponsors. Competitors must be entered in the matches to be eligible for these prizes. The matches will conclude on Sunday, 13 May, with a Four-Man Team Match.

Results for the Eastern CMP Games and Creedmoor Cup Matches will be posted live during the matches and also on the CMP web site through the CMP’s Competition Tracker system.

Be sure to mark your calendar and plan to attend the 2007 Inaugural Eastern CMP Games and Creedmoor Cup Matches. This will be one of the biggest rifle tournaments in the Eastern United States.
