Submitted by Kerry Rasmussen, SMGC CMP Division Representative

Fifty-two "soldiers," many clad in uniform, shot period correct rifles and pistols to participate the Southern Michigan Gun Club’s 8th Annual SMGC/CMP “Snow Shoot” Vintage Rifle Match on 26 January 2008.
Caleb Hughes, of Charlotte, MI, was the Overall match winner. He fired a 289-3X with a K-31 Swiss Rifle.

The cold snowy weather didn't stop the diehard shooters from enjoying the friendly competition and supporting the M1 for Vets Program, which provides M1 Garand Rifles to disabled vets of the War in Iraq and Afghanistan. In all a total of 52 shooters participated in rifle match, along with 20 pistol shooters and 15 period dressed competitors, and over $1000 dollars was raised for the M1 for Vets Program.

The overall match winner was Caleb Hughes. Hughes shot a 289-3X with a K-31 Swiss and received the First Place Trophy, a plaque and a gold Military CMP pin. The second place winner was Phil Randall who shot a 283-6X and received the Second Place Trophy, a plaque and a gold M1903 CMP pin. Alexandra Verburg was the top female shooter of the match. Competing in her very first Snow Shoot, Verburg shot an impressive 214-1X with an M1 Carbine and was awarded the First Place Women’s Trophy and a plaque. The First Place Junior Shooter went to Caleb Chapman. Chapman, using an M1 Garand, shot a 210 and took home the plaque and First Place Junior Shooter Trophy.

Tedor Sturm, wearing a German Infantry uniform, was awarded the Best Period Costume Award.

The Best Period Costume Award went to Tedor Sturm who wore a very authentic looking German Infantry uniform. The remaining shooters were all eligible for awards based on their scores as applied to the revised CMP cut scores.
