As the holiday break ends and schools start back across the country, it is already time for students to begin planning how they want to spend their summer vacation. For air rifle shooters we hope that one of the events that will be marked on their new 2009 calendars will be a CMP Three-Position Air Rifle Summer Camp. To help make this planning easier, the 2009 schedule has already been posted online, and registration forms will begin being accepted on 19 January.

The Three-Position Air Rifle Summer Camps are considered the premier camps for juniors who want to improve in marksmanship competition. This is the only rifle camp program available to junior shooters that is conducted by active collegiate shooters from some of the top NCAA Rifle programs in the country. Leading the camps this year will be Sommer Wood, who will serve as Camp Director and chief instructor. Wood is a five-year veteran of the CMP Summer Camp Program, and is the CMP’s Manager of Junior Programs. She is also a graduate of Clemson University where she competed on the Clemson Air Rifle Team. CMP camp veterans Katie Harrington and Keegan Singleton will assist Wood. Harrington is entering her fifth year with the camps, where she has served as a camp counselor. She was a four-year member of the University of Nebraska Rifle Team, and will graduate with a degree in Education in May. Singleton is entering his third-year with the camp program, and served as the camp gunsmith in 2008. He is currently a member of the University of Memphis Rifle Team. In addition the camps will be visited each week by guest speakers who have Olympic and National Team backgrounds, these guest will speak to the campers about their personal experiences and the qualities that make a champion.

Some new locations have been added to the camp schedule including camps in Alabama, Missouri and Oregon. Fort Benning, Georgia will again be on the 2009 schedule along with the CMP-North Competition Center at Camp Perry, OH. Both of these camp locations, along with the camp at the CMP-South Competition Center in Anniston, AL will offer state-of-the-art electronic target systems. The camps also make a return visit to Albuquerque, NM for the first time since 2005. In all there will be seven full-length camps and one advanced camp that will focus on the standing position. The Standing Position Camp was a new addition to the program in 2007; it is an intense three-day program geared for advanced athletes. Because the Standing Camp program builds on information taught in the Three-Position Camps, it is required that interested athletes attend a full-length CMP camp prior to entering the advanced camp.

Camp dates were posted on 5 January, but registration will not open until 19 January. Early forms will not be accepted. You can download registration and medical release forms now so that they are ready to submit once registration opens. Some camps tend to fill-up quickly so early registration is recommended.
