MidwayUSA Joins CMP in Support of Inaugural Three-Position Air Rifle National Championship Series

By Steve Cooper, CMP Marketing Manager

CAMP PERRY, OHIO – MidwayUSA, Inc., a leading U.S. firearms products retailer, owned and operated by Larry and Brenda Potterfield, of Columbia, Missouri, has joined the Civilian Marksmanship in reaching out to a broad spectrum of junior competitors by sponsoring the new CMP National Air Rifle Championship.

MidwayUSA has contributed $353,000 toward the effort, with two-thirds of that sum to be awarded in the form of endowments designed to help sustain junior shooting programs for years to come. The remaining dollars will assist CMP in funding the operation of the three-phase competition.

Giving back to the sport that has helped grow their organization into a household name in the firearms and outdoor community has become a Potterfield tradition since their humble beginnings in the late 1970s as a Columbia gun shop. Since then the organization has grown exponentially but the Potterfields have never forgotten the sportsmen and women who have patronized their business.

The partnership of MidwayUSA and the CMP, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization dedicated to the promotion of firearm safety and marksmanship, with an emphasis on youth, was an inevitable collaboration. The Potterfields established their own foundation in 2007 as a result of a passion and interest in education for shooting, hunting, firearms safety and outdoor skills.

The MidwayUSA Foundation’s largest fund is the Scholastic Shooting Trust (SST) Fund, an endowment to provide financial support for collegiate and high school shooting programs. The SST Fund, through its website, provides alumni and other interested parties of universities, colleges and high schools the ability to financially support a school's competitive shooting program or financially assist in the start-up of a scholastic shooting program.

Donations provide immediate grant potential for a school's shooting program(s) along with sustained funding from the investment earnings of the fund.

All three-position air rifle junior shooters are encouraged to register for the Inaugural Three-Position Air Rifle Postal Championship. Detailed information may be viewed on the CMP website at http://www.thecmp.org/3P/PostalChampionships.htm
