Two groups paid a visit to the center the week of 20 June as 25 law enforcement “master at arms” cadets from the Columbus, Ohio division of the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps and 85 members of the Air Force Junior ROTC Summer Leadership School fired sporter air rifles at the Marksmanship Center as part of the curriculum of both programs. In each case, cadets were given an opportunity to test their marksmanship skills as part of their overall missions to build individual and team skills and responsibilities in a variety of disciplines.

Instructors George King, 43 and Ensign Jeff Nowakowski, 38, mentored their group of Sea Cadets whose ages ranged from 14 to 17 years of age from across the country. King, an Ohio State Trooper and former Marine, said the marksmanship facet of cadet training was just one part of his law enforcement group’s goals of becoming better citizen leaders. In addition to marksmanship, his cadets participated in a variety of exercises which included canine handling and self defense tactics among others during their one-week camp.

The Sea Cadets rounded out their prone air rifle session with a “guts match” which eliminated shooters shot for shot by score until there was only one cadet remaining.

Col. Fred Schuster, USAF (Ret.), 73, of Mason, Ohio led a group of 13 instructors and assistants and 85 members of three high school AFROTC units from Ohio and one from Michigan for a week of activities which included marksmanship training. He is a retired Air Force and Delta Airlines pilot and oversees the AFJROTC program at Tecumseh High School in New Carlisle, Ohio. It was Col. Schuster’s eighth year of guiding the summer camp.

AFJROTC cadets were divided into flights who spent a week learning survival skills, drilling, land navigation, logistical planning skills and more. With teamwork at the forefront, cadets learned the values of becoming stronger individuals while working with others to reach team goals.

The AFJROTC group was housed by the 200th Red Horse Air National Guard at Camp Perry.
