The 2005 USMC Junior High Power Clinic wrapped up yesterday with awards and pizza for the 129 juniors in attendance. All successfully completed three days of instruction from members of the Marine Corps Rifle Team that included the 2005 Interservice individual winner Sgt. John Godwin. Sgt. Godwin was excited to see the progress the juniors were making in the clinic. “Helping the kids is a lot of fun; it’s awesome to see how much they can improve. Teaching marksmanship is what the Marine Corps Team is all about. We want to make a good impression on these juniors who may one day become Marines. It is important for them to understand that we joined the Marines to become a Marine, not to just be a shooter,” said Sgt.Godwin.

The three days included classroom and hands-on range instruction, including live demonstrations from the Marines in both off-hand and rapid fire stages. Patrick Northam, a junior at Freedom High School in North Carolina and a member of the North Carolina Rifle and Pistol Association Junior Team, was attending the USMC Clinic after spending a week at a CMP three position air rifle camp at Fort Benning, Georgia. “This was my second year attending both the CMP camp and the Marine clinic, and both camps apply to both disciplines. With the Highpower clinic I learn about dealing with the elements for shooting outside, and at the CMP camp we are able to touch more on the mental aspects of shooting. Though when it comes down to the fundamentals of shooting from setting up natural point of aim, to recording each shooting session in a journal or data book, it is all the same,” said Northam. Northam, along with most of the juniors attending the clinic, plans to shoot several of the matches this week so this clinic was a great way for him to get prepared. “It’s incredible how much you can learn, and how much your scores can improve by just listening to these guys for a couple of days,” said Northam.
