By Sommer Wood, CMP Writer/Editor

SFC Lance Dement USA won the President’s 100 Rifle Match with a 296-9X. This was SFC Dement’s first win in the President’s 100.

Temperatures were a scorching 95 degrees with a heat index of 105 degrees by mid-day during the President’s Rifle Match. This made for a long day for the 1275 competitors, though scores were still high despite the conditions. Winner of the President’s Match was SFC Lance Dement of the Army Marksmanship Unit with a score of 296-9X, two points over Sgt Kelly Wakefield of the U.S. Marine Corps who shot a 294 with an impressive 13X.

1275 competitors shot through the heat and humidity at Camp Perry for a chance to make the President’s 100. The cut-off for the 2006 President’s 100 was 285-6X.

This was the first win for SFC Dement in the President’s Match though he has been in the top 10 several times, coming as close as second place to the Trophy. “This match makes me the most nervous. I have gone to the 600 line twice in the lead and once tied for the lead, but have never won,” said SFC Dement. This time Dement was not the leader going into the last stage; in fact he was tied for third. It was not until the fifth and final relay of the day was fired that a winner was determined.

Many competitors display their state or club colors just as this shooter from South Carolina.

Kelly Hoeltschi of Newburgh, NY was the top junior of the Match with a 293-7X, a commanding four point lead over Jordan Whitman’s 289-6X. The cut-off for the President’s 100 was 285-6X.
