Congratulations to Dr. Michael A. Barrett, Executive Board member of the Stonewall Jackson Area Council and Council Venturing Chairman for an outstanding job of chairing the Second Annual Venturing/NRA Shootaround. (Pictured in the photo to the left-wearing the Venturing shirt). The Venturing/NRA Shootaround was held at the Council Camp located in Swoope, VA., Camp Shenandoah.

Dr. Barrett also serves on the Boy Scouts of America’s National Venturing Committee as Chairman of the Kodiak/Kodiak X Program since 2001. He is a physician at Augusta Medical Center, Fishersville, Virginia. Dr. Barrett received the prestigious Silver Beaver award in 2006. This years’ Venturing Shootaround grew from 24 participants in 2006 to 72 this year, a 200% increase.

Nine units from the Stonewall Jackson Area Council participated as well as Venture Crews from the Colonial Virginia Council, headquartered in Newport News, VA., National Capital Area Council, headquartered in Bethesda, MD., and the Baltimore Area Council, headquarter in Baltimore, MD.

Over 40 adult volunteers played a big role in organizing an outstanding program of Rifle, Pistol, Air Rifle, Archery, Black Powder-Muzzle Loading and Shotgun activities. As an added program feature this year, the co-ed youth were able to try their hand at fly-rod casting and fly-tying. Saturday evening, a bonfire was held where various awards were presented. Demonstrations and displays of handmade Indian flutes and a SWAT team weapons display filled the evening program.

The Venturing/NRA Shootaround events were tied to advancements in both Venturing and Boy Scouting requirements. Fourteen youth earned some fantastic prizes for top shooting and most improved.

Plans are already underway for the 3rd Annual Venturing/NRA Shootaround in 2008.
