Whiteside Wins O-Class Title and McKinney Wins T-Class in CMP Western Games Rimfire Sporter Match

PHOENIX, ARIZONA – Andy Whiteside, 22, of Tucson, Arizona took top honors in the Open Sights (O-Class) division of the Rimfire Sporter Match and Lee McKinney, 64, of Rio Rico, Arizona won the Telescopic (T-Class) championship and was the High Senior as well in T-Class at the CMP Western Games at the Ben Avery Shooting Facility, 17 October.

In the debut of the new Tactical Rimfire classification at the Western Games, William Ellis 45, of Slough, England (553-8X) topped Fritz Reuter, 68, of Mesa, Arizona (514-7X). Tactical Rimfire is based on a .22 caliber version of the A4 or AR15/M16 service rifle and made its first appearance earlier this year at the CMP National Trophy and CMP Games Matches at Camp Perry.

The Rimfire Sporter Match is a recreational match which appeals to a broad spectrum of veteran and new shooters new competitive shooters. Competitors use common “off the rack” .22 caliber sporter rifles, with or without telescopic sights and without features unique to competition rifles. A three-position (prone, sitting/kneeling and standing) course of fire with slow-fire and rapid-fire phases in each with 600 points possible. Prone and sitting/kneeling phases are fired at 50 yards and standing at 25 yards.
Arland Anderson was the High Senior competitor in the O-Class of Rimfire Sporter.

Whiteside fired an aggregate score of 562-10X and William Aten, 58 of Kingwood, Texas followed at 559-7X and Arland Anderson, 60, of Las Vegas, Nevada placed third with an aggregate of 556-8X in O-Class competition. Anderson was also the High Senior shooter in his division. The high scoring junior in the O-Class was Evan Hawksley, 15, of Palmdale, California who also won the best center shot competition in the standing rapid-fire stage, taking home a Remington Model 597, compliments of Remington Arms Company.

Match winners and high seniors in both divisions were presented with engraved CMP plaques. Gold, silver and bronze achievement medals were awarded to all competitors who fired at or above predetermined cut-off scores in each class.
Lee McKinney won the Rimfire Sporter T-Class title and also was High Senior in the match.

T-Class winner McKinney fired a 582-20X, highlighted by a clean 100-7X in prone rapid-fire. Runner-up Bruce Kawaguchi, 60, of Los Angeles, California fired two clean prone phases, 100-5X slow-fire and 100-7X rapid-fire, finishing with 578-16X. In third place, Jeffrey Schneider, 59, of Tucson, Arizona fired three 99’s (prone, sitting and standing, slow-fire) en route to an aggregate score of 573-16X.
Competitors move forward to replace targets between phases of the Rimfire Sporter Match. Hills covered with scrub, cacti and volcanic outcroppings serve as a backdrop to the ranges of Ben Avery, north of urban Phoenix.

The high junior shooter in the T-Class was Daniel Sharp, Jr., 20, of Oro Valley, Arizona who fired an aggregate score of 558-7X. The high scoring female in the T-Class competition was Mary Hanson of San Manuel, Arizona.
CMP’s Brad Donoho served as chief range officer for the event.

John Whiteside, 52, of Tucson, Arizona won a Savage MKI or MKII SVT rifle for winning the best center shot in the rapid-fire standing phase, compliments of the Savage Arms Company.

Mark Nelson, Sr., 52, of Phoenix and his son Mark, Jr. 26, of Sumter, South Carolina reunited at the range as part of their summer vacation. It was the third Rimfire Sporter match at the Western Games for Mark, Sr. and second for his son.

“I’ve always liked shooting,” Nelson, Jr. said. “My opportunity to shoot at home is limited because there are only a few gun ranges in South Carolina,” he added.

“We’re both looking forward to doing this again next year.”
